Misa & Michel & Mila
It was early this year, Misa and Michel rode on a motro bike through the night in Chiang Mai, whem the both realized, that today, now, this very insant, is peak happpniess.
Chiang Mai holds a special place in our lives. We have visited many countries, and even Mila has traveled quite a bit. But Chiang Mai stands out because it is the place we have visited the most. Other than Japan or Germany, it is also the place where we have spent the most time. It is difficult to describe, and pictures or videos do not do it justice. There is something in the air, a feeling of calm. It reminds Michel of warm late summer days in Munich when everything is slow and easy-going, and everyone is forgiving and kind, enriched by many hours of sun. For Misa, it is a connection to her heritage, where smiles and politeness are part of everyday life, and where a bit of extra care is done with religious grace.
Misa and Michel first came here on a family trip with Papa Rudy and brother Niklas. It was the first year of entrepreneurship, so they made it their home and laid the foundation for their company, AIZOME, here. A second trip soon followed, and last year, a third long stay of 3 months with colleagues from the organization.
The north of Thailand is part of a region some scholars call Zomia - Chinag Mai being it's only "large" city. Zomia reaches from northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar into India. It is very hilly and people live in small village communities with friendly relationships with their neighbors, often speaking very different languages. The Hmong, the Miao, the Lue, the Lao, and more tribes live here. They are connected by being a minority in their state but also by a curious history. Evidence shows that all felt the pull of large states such as Siam, Khmer, or China to move to cities where they would have become low-class serfs. Instead, they moved deeper into the mountains and adjusted their lives to make it hard for anyone to rule over them. Many gave up rice farming, a crop that can be easily taxed as it is harvested regularly, and just lived off fruit. Others seem to have given up writing to make it hard for anyone to control their narrative - these are the masters in the art of not being governed.
I guess this is enough to tell you why we love this place and why would love to experience it now with you. So please, whatever you need to get this done, do it. We see you in Zomia.
